WNBA legend Lisa Leslie discusses school choice with Louisiana families and legislators

WNBA legend, 4-time Olympic gold medal winner and Champion for Choice, Lisa Leslie was in Baton Rouge, La., on Tuesday, speaking with Louisiana lawmakers about the importance of school choice.

During the Louisiana School Choice Legislative Reception, Leslie shared the story of when she realized the importance of choice, when she and her husband had to move to have access to quality schools.

“What about all of the families that we just left behind who don’t have the means to be able to pick up and move. We need to do something about that. It was my first understanding about the injustice that was happening in my community,” said Leslie.

Leslie also met with parents and students who participate in the Louisiana Scholarship Program.

The Louisiana Scholarship Program provides parents with the financial resources to send their child to the school of their choice. 7,110 low-income students enrolled in participating schools during the 2015-2016 school year.

The Louisiana School Choice Legislative Reception was sponsored by the Louisiana Federation for Children, Democrats for Education Reform Louisiana, Louisiana Association of Public Charter Schools and Louisiana Black Alliance for Educational Options.
